An Artist of The "Intermediate Generation" - Film and Discussion about Herbert Behrens-Hangeler

Our next soirée on Wednesday, 9 November 2016, at 6.30 pm, on the occasion of our current exhibition, is dedicated to the Berlin painter Herbert Behrens-Hangeler (1898 – 1981).

Hangeler calls himself an artist of the “intermediate generation”. Under the reign of Nationl Socialism, his paintings were condemned as “degenerate”, and in the early GDR, they were refused as “formalist”. Nevertheless the painter, quietly and in seclusion, continued his work, a work that in the 1920s had been represented in national and international exhibitions of the avant-garde and fell into oblivion as a result of the social ostracism towards the artist. In the early 1980s it was rediscovered to the public.

That evening, a discussion group as well as the documentary film “Fluchtburg Fredersdorf” by Ursula and Günter Feist, broadcast in 1995 by the SFB, will recall Herbert Behrens-Hangeler’s personality, life, and artistic work. For the discussion, moderated by the literary scholar Paul Werner Wagner, we are glad to welcome the visual artists Erika Stürmer-Alex and Klaus Roenspieß, former students with Hangeler, and the art historian Dr. Sibylle Badstübner-Gröger, a connoisseur of his work.

As places are limited, we would ask you to inform about your participation by 5 November.
The soirée will last until about 9 pm Admission is free.
