* 30 April 1930 in Greiz, † 10 January 2004 in Berlin
Sculptor and graphic artist
The Berlin artist Wolfram Beck, a representative of Concrete Art, left behind an extensive and multifaceted oeuvre as a sculptor, draftsman, painter, and poet. At the same time, he was a master of aesthetic rigor and technical precision; a high degree of sensitivity in the handling and processing of diverse sculptural materials characterizes his work.
Beck’s early works included large organic wood sculptures as well as portrait busts and torsos made of clay and stone. In the 1970s he created strictly geometric, airy and filigree sculptures from mechanical and electronic components, which can be set in motion either by drives or by hand. In addition, he designed color-accented and seemingly fragile objects made of stainless steel and acrylic glass. His works were preceded by precise designs that, thanks to their high quality, can stand on their own.
As a freelance artist, he realized commissioned works for foundations, companies, and the public art program “Art in Architecture,” as well as for the film and television award “Goldene Kamera”.
The artistic estate is managed by the “Wolfram Beck Foundation“, established in 2021. Its aim is to make the oeuvre accessible to the public and thereby enable art-historical engagement with it. Another goal is to support young sculptors and, in the spirit of Wolfram Beck, to contribute to the study and appreciation of sculpture in Germany since 1950. In the 20th year after the artist’s death, the foundation, together with the Berlin University of the Arts, established the “Wolfram Beck Prize for Sculpture“, which is awarded annually.
